Congratulations Vergennes Junior Iron Chef Competitors!

About 200 middle and high school students from across Vermont competed on March 18, 2017 at the 10th Annual Vermont Junior Iron Chef Competition in Essex. Junior Iron Chef VT is a statewide culinary competition that challenges teams of middle and high school students to create healthy, local dishes that inspire school meal programs.

We are proud to announce that the Vergennes Middle School Fusion after school program was represented by a group of 5 very talented and creative students. Audrey Delp, Olivia Wyckoff, Abigail Goodyear, Antonio Socinski and Audrey Tembreull, also known as the “Jalapeno Hotties”, were coached by JoAllen Vincent from Cafe Services and Basin Harbor Club Executive Chef Christian Kruse.

100 lbs of chopped onions, potatoes, carrots, and determination and hard work guaranteed the team a spot in the final 3. The Vergennes Jalapeno Hotties also won the “Mise en Place” award, one of the highest honors at the competition, given to the team that shows exemplary teamwork, order and professionalism, both during the competition and in the registration process.

The winning dish “Vegetable Pot Pie with Mashed Potatoes” was made with organic ingredients from Pete's Greens Organic Vegetable Farm and will be served during school lunches on Thursday April 13th. The Vergennes Jalapeno Hotties are one of six winning teams chosen to prepare their winning dish for legislators at the Vermont State House in Montpelier, Vermont on April 11th.
