VUHS Students Earn State Titles in Cheerleading & Wrestling

While we were away on February break, Vergennes Union High School hosted three state championship events.

On Saturday, February 18th, the state dance and cheerleading championships took place with over 3000 people going through VUHS and into the Vergennes community.

In the cheerleading competition, Vergennes coach and alumnus, Jennifer Johnson, led her team to the top spot in D2 with an impressive performance. With a spirited crowd of supporters taking up much of the bleachers in the gym, the cheerleaders put on quite the show and jumped, tumbled, flipped and cheered their way to a state title. The team will now take the next couple weeks to prepare for the New England Championships in Rhode Island.

On Friday & Saturday, February 24th and 25th, VUHS hosted 26 schools and another 1000 visitors during the state wrestling tournament. The conclusion of the wrestling event was highlighted by a raised 48' x 44' stage in which the championship matches took place. It was quite impressive.

In the state wrestling tournament, Brandon Cousino captured his 2nd consecutive state title. Brandon went 3-0 during the two day event, never being pushed past the 1st period in any of his matches. With the championship victory, Brandon concludes the regular season with a 41-1 record (92-1 over the past two seasons). Brandon heads to the New England championships in Rhode Island this weekend where he looks to improve on his 6th place finish from a year ago. Of note, our wrestling team is also coached by Vergennes alumni, Nate Kittredge and Scott Bissonette.

Congratulations to the varsity cheerleading team, Brandon, and their respective coaches on a great season and good luck to all in Rhode Island.

Pete Maneen
VUHS Athletic Director
