VUHS Teacher of the Year

VUHS Teacher of the Year – Meghan McGrath
Meghan McGrath goes above and beyond to not only provide her classroom students with exceptional learning opportunities, but also strives to bring unique and innovative programming to the entire middle school. Her initiatives last year alone included Genius Hour, which was hugely successful in engaging students who don't generally feel successful in school, independent study opportunities for students ready to take their learning to a higher level; planning and running a 2 day creative writing event and linking middle school work to Personalized Learning Plans (PLPs) and the Proficiency Based Graduation Requirements (PBGRs). She strives to challenge herself by teaching complex and provocative texts, modeling the things that feel hard, like talking about race with students, and providing students with meaningful opportunities to be heard. The students she works with have true voice and choice in her classroom. She has arranged several student-centered action projects including having students lead team meetings, writing entries for the school news and helping them present to the entire faculty. As if this work alone does not qualify her to be teacher of the year she has also stepped up as a leader for Team Phoenix and models the middle school practices we all strive to implement. This school community benefits greatly from her presence. Thanks and congratulations, Meghan.

Meghan, VUHS Principal, Stephanie Taylor, ANWSU Superintendent, JoAn Canning, along with VUES Teacher of the Year, Melissa Haggett, and VUES Principal, Matt DeBlois attended the Teacher of the Year Awards Ceremony on Tuesday October 18th at the University of Vermont.
